Kids and Sermons
Nancy was driving the kids home the other day while listening to some hymns. "Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted" began to play and afterwards E., who is 4, asked if Jesus died on a tree or on a cross. The song, you'll remember, says "Stricken, smitten and afflicted, see him dying on the tree."
Nancy explained to her that whether it was a cross or a real tree with a cross-beam nailed to the trunk didn't change that he died on a tree. E. then said, "Remember when we went to that other church at Easter and the pastor preached about how Jesus died on a real tree?"
E. was recalling our visit to an area PCA church on Good Friday this past year. I found it amazing that she remembered what the pastor said about the cross and almost a year had passed.
Our church doesn't have children's church for practical and theological reasons. I'm really glad. We've had some good talks with our kids because of the sermons. They never get the whole thing but they do get snippets and I think that's important.
